DESIGN PROCESS; FROM SKETCH TO REALITY

Design is a creative activity. What makes it different to any traditional art is that in design process there is a step in which reason is getting considered. During designing something, everything you create or choose needs a reason.

Design Process
Even though designers have their own way, basically the process is same. Designing a product is about visualize the concept, no matter it will be developed into real thing or not. There are several steps in design process, I'd like to tell you using my own words: Data Bank, Get the Idea, Concept Making and Get Real.

For example, I'd like to elaborate the Design Process using my simple project. It is a TV Panel I designed for my Client.

Data Bank
During this step, I collect the information about: User's need, existing room including dimension and colour, user's personality and what does the user pursue with the product.

Get the Idea
This is the second step. Based on Data Bank, I start getting the idea. I always come up with the raw sketches.
Tips from me: Make it quick. It is quick sketch which means I don't need to create the tidy one. I don't even need to show it to any other than me. That's why Visual Dairy is compulsory. I reckon that designers must have a Visual Dairy to quickly record what comes up on their mind.

Concept Making
The raw sketches need to improve. Within this level, I use computer software to visualize the idea. Afterwards, I show it to the client. Usually client give me input so that I have to alter the design, that is why I use computer as it is easier to alter.

Get Real
I don't wanna say that every design needs getting real. However, building the design into real thing is still in design activity. During this level, my activities are: Drawing the working plan, communicating to the developer and managing the timeline. Be flexible! Reality is sometimes different from the imaginary. So don't worry if it goes different from the design.

 So....
As I told you before, designers have their own way but basically the same. However, rules are made to be broken. If you are a beginner one, should you learn the rules. Afterwards, you must break them and create your own one.
